For smaller living rooms you have two options.
If you want to be confident that you re choosing the right area rug size for your dining room table simply add at least 60 inches to the length and the width of your table to get your ideal rug size.
Area rugs that are 4 x 6 feet or 6 x 9 feet are generally suitable for using under coffee tables.
If you choose a layout with the sofa on the rug the rug should extend at least 6 on each side for proper scale.
Choose a rug that s at least 2 feet longer on each side.

The front two legs of all major pieces of furniture should fit on your area rug sofas chairs tables and even beds.
This allows ample room for your guests chairs to sit comfortably on the rug.
Option 2 larger rooms typically require a rug that is between 8 x 10 9 x 12.
For instance a 40 by 60 inch table should be paired with at least an 8 by 10 foot rug but would work best with a 9 by 12 foot rug.
